We work with certified organic farms, locally-grown farmers market plants cultivated without chemicals, and other small farms whose practices are un-certified, however, organic by nature. We are in favor of organic and of supporting small farms in their growth and practices.
Hampshire Farms – Certified Organic – Est. 1896 Locally, we work with Hampshire Farms for sunflower seeds when they have them available. Currently their stock is out for the season.
Currently, we get 50lb bags of Certified Organic Sunflower seeds from our local Coop Grocery store, the Ann Arbor, People’s Food Coop. They are from Ohio and called Sunwarrior.
Brit is our friend at Fillmore farms, a small farm in California, where we order our certified organic walnuts by the box. Fillmore Farms is located in Gridley, CA and Brit is a gem to work with. Read about their farm here.
We currently only use almonds for our seasonal rotating farmers market/storefront/mail order bars, because of the large drought that California is experiencing and have made a concious choice to switch our almond bars to hazelnut, walnut, sunflower seed, or a combination.
We use raw, un-certified organic, Unpasteurized California Almonds from Oakdale, CA. We buy them through Your Paris Market. Farm fresh, family grown, raw, unpasteurized, shelled almonds. Packaged bulk in a large cardboard box. These almonds were harvested by a small family at a ranch and are kept in cold storage. They have a few acres of almonds and have not yet gone through the certification process because of the orchard’s small size. No pesticides or herbicides have been sprayed.
Our tamarind comes from Thailand and it’s good stuff. Originally, we bought tamarind by the box from whole foods in it’s shells and peeled shell and fiber off, then took out each seed one at a time. That was a crazy labor of love project and still is, but not in the least efficient. Currently, our Tamarind comes from Thailand and I’ll take a picture of the package for you to see. It’s good stuff and comes without too many seeds left in it.
Our date paste is processed in a meat grinder without the animal, and comes in beautiful line designs and does not get heated past a point to kill active enzymes. Greg is our man!
We have been in communication with Oasis Date Gardens about their deglet Organic Date Paste to see if it would work for our needs in case we ever need a second source.
Most of our herbs that we cannot get from local farms and suppliers in our home town, Ann Arbor, come from Mountain Rose Herbs. They’re the best!
Definitely check out their website for all their wonderful products and sourcing information. We choose organic or non-certified organic (to help support small farms). We get from Mountain Rose Herbs:
Turmeric Root, Fenugreek Root, Cinnamon, Licorice Root, Cayenne Powder, Ginger Root Powder, etc etc etc.
We, typically, go through Mountain Rose Herbs for our Spirulina. However, we found another awesome source from Hawaii and I’ll let you know their name in the next few days. We have, also, worked with Starwest Botanicals as our source for Organic Spirulina Powder. We are continuously working to find the cleanest and most sustainably harvested sources.
Black Sesame Seeds
Foods Alive. We have gotten our deeply nourishing sesame seeds from Michael and Ellen, our dear friends and supporters at Foods Alive. They are Organic, Raw, Vegan, Gluten Free and Kosher. We’re in the process of making them our main supplier.
At times, we buy Organic Black Sesame seeds from a local Asian Grocery store bag by bag. They are really tasty but I’m not sure exactly where they come from, only that they are organic.
Celtic Sea Salt
We Use Celtic Sea Salt Brand Light Grey Sea Salt, completely unprocessed, kosher and hand harvested. It is dried by the sun and the wind, retaining the ocean’s moisture and locking in a vast array of vital trace elements. A coarse, moist salt that gets a light grey hue from the pure clay sole it is harvested from. There is no comparison, in taste or in health effects, between mineral-rich Celtic Sea Salts and chemically-treated iodized salts. This one has a rustic old world flavor that is more assertive than other salts. It is certified organic compliant by Nature and progress, the highest level of certification allowed in France.
Fermented Organic Raw Cacao bean powder from Edith Huber with Authentic Provisions Buying Club, a local buying club outside of Ann Arbor, where folks go in on bulk orders together, making them both eligible for wholesale prices and to guarantee farmers large orders so they can pla their growth.
Grows wild on B Bars family farm, Eat Ideas Farm, dispersed with squash and other plants cultivated without chemicals. We go out as a family and harvest this well-rooted wonder of a plant.
We are always updating our suppliers and working to improve our suppliers list and welcome you to contact us if you grow or produce any of the ingredients we use or know a great source, just email us at: firstname.lastname@example.org. We truely appreciate it. Thanks and Great!
